Welcome to OffHeGoes.net. OffHeGoes is run by Chad Berkley. I am a computer programmer and photographer from Portland, Oregon. I have been writing software in one form or another for 13 years. I have been shooting photos for over 15 years. I started both while I was in High School in Sandpoint, Idaho. I attended the University of Montana, Missoula and graduated in 2000 with a B.S. in Computer Science with minors in Math and German.
I am currently a staff software engineer for the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), a collaborative Ecology lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have worked on several projects over my nearly 8 years of working at NCEAS. The software I have helped develop allows ecologists and other scientists to manage data in new and innovative ways.
I started shooting photos as a reporter and editor on my high school newspaper staff. I've been shooting photos consistently ever since. Last year, friends convinced me to get serious about showing and selling my work. The amazing art scene in Portland makes it both fun and easy to get out and show people my art. I love talking to people about art and photography. Even if I don't sell a single image, I always enjoy going to art shows in the Portland area. I am a member of the Urban Art Network and I currently show my work at their First Thursday street fair in the Pearl District on the first Thursday of each month from April until November. I also display my work at the Last Thursday street fair on Alberta Street on the last Thursday of each month.
Besides programming and photography, I also have many other interests. I am a licensed helicopter pilot and will be working toward my certified flight instructor rating (CFI) soon. I am also an avid skier, climber, hiker and surfer. I enjoy being outside as much as I possibly can (and usually have my camera in tow). I also enjoy working on collaborative art projects and I have participated in Burning Man several times.
