After getting back from the McKenzie late Friday night, Andrea and I packed up the truck Saturday morning and headed to the coast do camp at Cape Disappointment and canoe the Lake Island Forest. We got a great camp spot right next to the beach then we spent the rest of Saturday exploring the peninsula. We drove to the far north end to Leadbetter State Park and wildlife preserve and hiked 1.5 miles through the coastal pine scrub to the beach. We also visited Oysterville, a >100 year old hamlet with a store where you can buy oysters literally straight off the boat. The peninsula is a cool area with nice houses in the woods, cranberry farms and old growth forests. Great hiking and wildlife watching.

The next day, we went to a small lake, where Columbia Land Trust had just acquired a bunch of land on the east side of the lake. We canoed the length of the lake. It was great. Totally quiet except for the sound of the ocean a couple miles away. We picnicked on the north end of the lake and while we were eating, we watched a deer come out of the bushes on the other side of the lake. The deer started walking around the lake toward us and finally got within 40 ft of us when Andrea finally chased it away. It looked like it would have come right up to us. Since its almost hunting season, we wanted to do it a favor by making it a bit more weary of humans.
